about me

My name is Alex, I reside in the South Bay Area of the great state of California where I work as a high school physics teacher. My formal education is in computer science with a focus on machine learning/ai. Despite my training as a computer scientist, I identify primarily as an engineer of many disciplines. I have a breadth of experience in mechanical, electrical, and computer engineering, all contributing to my passion for building useful solutions and solving hard problems. The bulk of my engineering skills were developed at Howard Community College
My faith lies in data, logic, mathematics, and an unwavering belief in the ability of humanity to do good. One of my long-standing tenet is that the world is cruel, so therefore I must be kind. I believe we do owe ourselves to our friends, family, and communties, in light of the common attitude that nobody owes anybody anything. A Type 1 Diabetic since 2007, the motivation for most of my work is solving the treatment problem of insulin-pump therapy in people living with diabetes. The promise of a cure has been dangled in front of diabetics for decades, with minimal progress. I recognize that I am not well equipped to work on a cure, but in the meantime I have set my focus on improving insulin pump therapy implementations. I envision an insulin pump system that is seamless, becoming a full closed-loop system that effectively replaces the diabetic endocrine process. Since 2019, I have been collecting data and literature on effective use of machine learning methods for insulin and blood glucose prediction. My current research focus is centered around architectures that make use of the attention mechanism introduced in "Attention is All You Need".
In my spare time I enjoy cooking, longboarding, dancing, and spending time with my goofy goober dog, Henry. He provides valuable research commentary.
